The Career Audit: Design a future that fulfills you
In today’s whirlwind of demands, it can feel like you're merely riding the wave in your career, bending to the expectations and pressures around you. But here’s the truth: reclaiming your career isn’t just possible; it’s essential. Real growth and fulfillment come when you step back, reflect, and set your own course forward.
Taking back your career doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a journey of self-awareness, honoring your strengths, recognizing your wins, and intentionally defining goals for the future. This kind of introspection isn’t always comfortable, but trust—it’s worth every bit of effort.
Why coaching matters
One of the most powerful ways to create clarity and regain control is by working with a career coach. A seasoned coach is more than just a guide—they’re your partner in this journey, helping you sift through the noise so you can make decisions that actually feel right for you. Working with a coach puts you squarely in the driver’s seat, where you belong.
I remember early on in my career, I would go into interviews without a clear plan. I flopped, and the results reflected that. There was no magic in it because I wasn’t taking charge of how my skills and goals aligned with the role. That’s when I realized: if I didn’t treat my career as a purposeful journey, I couldn’t expect anyone else to.
Many of us start out assuming companies will proactively invest in our growth. But here’s the thing: while some do provide great training opportunities, ultimately, your development rests in your hands. That’s the clarity I bring to my coaching clients, helping them identify and follow a North Star worth pursuing, one that lights them up and pushes them forward.
Finding your own path forward
If coaching isn’t on your radar right now, no worries—try a personal audit of your career journey. Ask yourself what truly brings you fulfillment. Take stock of your past experiences, the challenges you’ve overcome, and what makes you proud. Reflect honestly on these questions to steer your career with intention:
1. What work are you most proud of?
2. What makes that work special?
3. What small steps can you take today to create more of those fulfilling moments?
By reflecting on these questions, you’re zeroing in on what drives you, which is crucial for aligning your career with your passions and values. Remember, we spend the bulk of our lives working—so why not shape that time into something rewarding and meaningful?
If you’re not regularly setting aside time for career reflection, make it a habit. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small. This will boost your confidence, keeping you motivated when challenges arise.
Lastly, give yourself permission for your career to look different. Forget about fitting into anyone else’s mold. True fulfillment is about how you feel about the legacy you’re building—not just about the applause from others. So, go on, set the course, make it yours, and light up your career in a way that makes you come alive.
